Interview With Maria Fusco

Maria Fusco - By Cathy O'Connor

Maria Fusco is undoubtedly one of the most stylish women I know.  Every time I meet her, I stand back in admiration of her latest creation. She continues to re-invent her look and her life, which has taken her from fashion designer, boutique owner to stylist and author.  One aspect remains the same… a true passion for style.

What does the word ‘style’ mean to you?

The word style implies a multitude of beautiful thoughts.  A person radiates
style when she is confident, charming  and graceful. Style begins from within us, from our inner soul. How we decorate our bodies says a lot to the world. However I feel we should dress firstly for ourselves and then our audience! We must wear our beautiful clothes and not allow clothes wear us. Style is about surrounding ourselves with exquisite music, exotic scents, handsome people and dazzling clothes!

When did you know that fashion would be a big part of your life?

I was 3 years old when I realized that fashion would be my  passion forever!

I owe all of this love to my mum. I remember my mum having boxes full of beautiful
fabrics. She taught me how to cut directly into the fabric without a pattern. I made
my first dress when I was 7! My little sister Mina was to be my first unfortunate fashion victim! Although in school we had a uniform, I never had much regard for it and continuously got into trouble for being creative and wearing what I thought was more appealing to the eye!

During class I preferred to sketch  girls with gorgeous dresses as opposed to boring theorems. It is no wonder that I never passed a maths test!

What designers do you admire most and why?

My ultimate hero has to be Thierry Mugler. His timeless elegance and his obsession with hyper femininity has always inspired me. His insistence on showing highly stylized silhouettes, highlighting the delicacy of the woman’s body, season after season has driven to my obsession with this creative visual artist .

Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, YSL, Azzedine Alaia , Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood remain amongst my  favorites because they personify enticing, confident , beautiful and stylish silhouettes.

What are your words of wisdom when it comes to developing personal style?

Our silhouette consist of 3 layers. First the soul, then our lingerie and finally our clothes! Only wear pieces that make you feel incredible! Think about your mood and next choose your underwear. Beautiful lingerie is a must to feeling fabulous. Learn how to read a mirror. Emphasise your gorgeous bodily bits and camouflage the rest! Spoil your bodies with sumptuous fabrics such as silk, cashmere, calf leather and lace. Life is too short for basics, indulge in only beautiful pieces that you will love forever. In doing so, you create your own unique style. Embrace your femininity and always add a dash of panache
by dabbing an extra drop of perfume behind the earlobe and between your cleavage! As a stylist, I like to give women something to dream about and this means making the world a more beautiful place to live in .
